Red Currants

Red Currants

My Great-Grandpa Stewart said these red currants "got him through The Depression." Currants were a popular fruit at the time, used for baking, jelly, and more. The U.S. government imposed restrictions on the sale of currant plants in the early 1900s because of the spread of a disease that was killing pine trees.

This government intervention caused a dip in the supply of currants, which means the fruit brought even higher prices at the big city markets like Detroit.

I can only imagine that Grandpa Stewart probably saw this opportunity and planted even more currants. It's a great lesson on seeing opportunities in our challenges.
