This popular heirloom variety was introduced in the 1993 Southern Exposure Seed Exchange catalog after seeds were shared by JD Green of Sevierville, TN. Green told heirloom tomato researcher Craig LeHouiller that the seeds had been given to him by a neighbor who claimed they descended from a purple tomato given to his family by Cherokee Indians one hundred years ago.
