In the 1930s, Marshall Cletis Byles of Logan, West Virginia cross-pollinated several large tomato varieties including beefsteak, German Johnson, an Italian variety, and an English variety German Johnson. He sold seedlings for $1 each during the Great Depression, using the profits to pay off his $6,000 mortgage, and named the tomato variety after this achievement.
